Dr. Glen is also Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy – where he also served as Head from 2013-2018. He was previously founding Director of the UIC Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research (2002-2013), and has been a faculty member in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois Chicago for over 25 years. Dr. Schumock is a licensed pharmacist (in Illinois and Washington), and was a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) from 1993-2014. He has worked as clinical pharmacist and held several managerial positions in hospital pharmacy – including Director of Pharmacy and Respiratory Care at Wausau Hospital in Wisconsin.
He has degrees from Washington State University (B.Pharm.), the University of Washington (Pharm.D.), and the UIC (M.B.A., and Ph.D.). He also completed residency and fellowship training at the University of Washington and UIC.
Dr. Schumock’s research and expertise is in the economic impact, clinical effectiveness, and safety of pharmaceuticals and related services or policies. His research has been funded by the NIH, AHRQ, FDA, private foundations, and various pharmaceutical companies. He has received over $6 million in funding as a PI or co-PI. Dr. Schumock has authored and edited over 200 articles and books, which have been cited nearly 5,500 times and resulted in an h-index of 36. He is currently on the editorial board of the journals Pharmacotherapy and PharmacoEconomics, and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Comparative Effectiveness Research. In 2014 he received the Award for Sustained Contributions to the Literature from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Foundation.
He is active in professional pharmacy organizations and has served as Treasurer and member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), a member of the Board of Directors for Pharmacotherapy Publications Inc., and was founding Vice President of the Chicago-Area Chapter of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR). He is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Finally, Dr. Schumock is an experienced and award-winning educator who has coordinated and taught professional and graduate courses on pharmacy management, business planning, pharmacoeconomics, and research methods. He has advised over 20 research fellows and graduate students. The third edition of his book, “How to Develop a Business Plan for Pharmacy Services,” is used across the US to teach business planning to pharmacy students, clinicians, managers, and pharmacy leaders.
